SUMTER COUNTY, FL (352today.com) – All across the 352, animal shelters are pushing their limits. Sumter County’s shelter is no exception which is why it’s holding an adoption event this week and encouraging giving the gift of a pet this holiday season.

Sumter County Animal Services (SCAS) says it “has plenty of furry ‘gifts’ desperately looking for their furever home.”

SCAS is holding a special ‘Home for the Holidays’ adoption/fostering event on Thursday, Dec. 14 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at The Villages Sumter County Service Center located at 7375 Powell Rd. in Wildwood. After Thursday, the adoption event will continue until Dec. 23 at Animal Services at 819 CR 529, Lake Panasoffkee.

The shelter’s website says all adoption fees are currently waived.

While a new pet can bring joy to your home, it’s important to remember that pet ownership is a big responsibility, and it can come with its fair share of struggles.

“The family and the pet need to bond. Sometimes it happens quickly; sometimes it can take weeks or even a few months,” said SCAS in a news release. “Your home is new to the pet, and some need time to get used to their new surroundings and life.”

If you are considering a pet, but aren’t sure if it’s right for you, fostering a shelter dog or cat is also an option. “These animals are happy to be out of the shelter and in the environment of a happy home where they can get more individualized attention and love,” said SCAS on its website. If you are considering adopting or fostering, SCAS says these are the key things to consider:
• If you already have a pet, use caution during introductions
• Allow your new pet to familiarize itself with its new home
• Introduce your pets in controlled situations
• Give them time; do not force them together or leave them unattended
• Praise, praise, praise; and give lots of rewards for good behavior
