HERNANDO COUNTY, FL (352today.com) – The Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) is searching for a driver who hit and killed a bicyclist on New Year’s Day.

FHP says the accident happened on U.S. Highway 301 south of Running Pon Lane around 6:45 a.m. on Monday.

Troopers say a driver traveling southbound on Highway 301 hit a bicyclist traveling the same direction.

FHP says the impact of the crash threw the cyclist to the shoulder. According to FHP, the vehicle continued to drag the bicycle down the highway for 350 feet before it dislodged.

They say the driver left the scene without checking on the cyclist.

Troopers have identified the cyclist as a 44-year-old man from Ridge Manor.  They say he didn’t have a helmet, was wearing dark clothes and no lights on his bike.

FHP is searching for the driver of a 2007-2010 Ford Edge. They don’t know the color of the car.
