OCALA, FL (352today.com) – The man suspected of killing a man and injuring a woman in a shooting at Ocala’s Paddock Mall appeared before a judge Tuesday to hear the charges against him.

Albert Shell Jr. was part of the assembly line of accused men and women appearing before Judge Thomas P. Thompson III Tuesday. In Marion County, first appearances are conducted remotely from the jail courtroom and viewed on television monitors in the courthouse.

This had to be a reasonably familiar process for the 39-year-old who has been booked into the jail 20 times in the last 20 years.

Shell appeared with public defender Amanda Sizemore as the judge explained the charges against him which include first-degree premeditated murder and first-degree premeditated attempted murder, as well as other charges from an outstanding warrant unrelated to the mall shooting.

The more serious charges stem from the shooting that killed 40-year-old David Barron two days before Christmas and injured a woman who police say had no connection to either man.

After more than two weeks on the run, Ocala police captured Shell early Monday at a home in the Florida Highlands with the assistance of the Marion County Sheriff’s Office and the U.S. Marshals Office.

The judge denied bond for Shell.

“His criminal history alone tells me he should have never been on the street to have been able commit this crime. We’re going to see to it that he spends the rest of his life behind bars,” said Ocala Police Chief Mike Balken at a news conference on Monday.
