OCALA, FL (352today.com) – Each year, the fifth of May gives Americans a reason to hit their favorite Mexican restaurant, sip on giant salt-rimmed glasses of Margaritas, and try out some new recipes to celebrate the day. In Mexico, however, Cinco de Mayo is just another day.

Many believe that Cinco de Mayo is a celebration of Mexican independence, but History.com says otherwise; it is actually the commemoration of an improbable Mexican victory over the French at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862.

As for celebrating with a fiesta in Mexico, History.com notes that it is primarily observed in the state of Puebla.

For those keeping track, Mexico’s Dia de la Indepencia (Independence Day) is celebrated on September 16. Dieciseis de Septiembre just doesn’t have the same ring to it as Cinco de Mayo, does it?
