OCALA, FL (352today.com) – Okay, okay.  I’ve given a little info here and there on my recipe for the elusive Bacon Burger Dog. But, I’ve never actually put it in writing on the interwebs – UNTIL NOW.

The origin actually comes from a popular family sitcom from the ’80s that we will not mention here due to its namesake’s fall from grace (IYKYK).

“Bacon Burger Dog” is what the high school son and his friends called pretty girls. I always thought it would make a delicious meat-lovers food to place on a bun with some cheese and various condiments like barbecue sauce and grilled onions.

So, I don’t use exact measurements. Bear with me as I give you a general idea of how to make this delicious meat montage.

Pro Tip 1: Pick up some sausage rolls for these because they are way too large for the average hot dog bun.

Ingredients

Ground Beef: You’ll need a pound or so of lean ground beef. I use the super lean stuff, but ground sirloin works well, too.

Season it with salt, pepper, and whatever else you like in your burger meat. I use a little Kinder’s Buttery Burger Blend, as well. Mix it up with a fork so that you don’t warm the meat too much with your hands.

Pro Tip 2: When burger meat gets compacted and warmed up while it’s raw, it tends to seize up and get tough when it’s cooked.

Hot Dogs: You’re going to need a package of your favorite hot dogs. My husband likes those quarter-pound dogs that come in a giant package at the big box discount retailer. The brand really doesn’t matter. They all work well. If you want to get fancy, get cheese dog. You know those ones with tiny chunks of cheese already in the dog.

Assembling

Anyhow… grab a burger-ball-sized lump of burger meat and smash it out some.

Take a slice of cheese. American, Cheddar, Swiss, Muenster, Mozzarella… whatever you like. You want a thin slice of cheese so that it bends easily. Place the cheese slice on the smashed-out burger meat.

Put a hot dog on top of the cheese and work the burger-cheese around the dog until it’s encased.

Grab a piece of bacon. You can use thin or thick. Doesn’t matter.

Wrap the bacon around the burger-wrapped dog diagonally.  You might need a second piece or half a second piece of bacon to fully wrap it.

Repeat the process until you’re out of meat or dogs. You can live without the bacon and cheese if you have to.

Sprinkle them with a little more of your favorite seasoning.

Cooking

I’m going to presume that you’ve fired up your grill and it’s ready to roll.  You could broil them in the oven, if grilling isn’t an option. But that’s not my recommendation.

I’ve only grilled these, so I can only give you those directions. Throw these puppies on your grill. Keep an eye on them because they cook quickly. Plus, you need to watch for flare-ups from the bacon grease.

Turn them every so often to cook them evenly.

In the last minute or two, brush them with your favorite barbecue sauce. I use Sonny’s or Sweet Baby Ray’s. Let it caramelize before you pull ’em off the grill.

Have a clean serving tray nearby.

Pop ’em on a sausage roll and top it with more cheese and your favorite condiments. So. Easy.
