WILDWOOD, FL (352today.com) – Area commuters should make alternate plans if they intend to use a well-traveled thoroughfare.
Huey Street from Gamble Street to St. Clair Street will close to through traffic beginning July 2.
Infrastructure improvements are being made, with upgrades to the utility and drainage systems, there will be roadway construction and other enhancements taking place during the closure.
Residents who live in the impacted area, will have access to their properties during this time. Other traffic will be rerouted, with detours being marked by signage.
“After several years of planning, design and budgeting, we are eager to complete this project and bring these significant improvements to our citizens,” said Jeremy Hockenbury, City of Wildwood public works director, in a news release. “As Wildwood continues to grow, we’re working hard to ensure our infrastructure not only meets but exceeds the expectations and demands placed upon it.”

Huey Street is a critical component for commuters traveling to Wildwood Elementary and Middle High Schools, providing direct access. The city says the improvements will make for a smoother ride for buses, parents and faculty.
Public works and the city’s contractor say they are working to make sure the construction stays on schedule so they can reopen the road to traffic prior to the start of the academic year.
“We want to assure the public we are seeking ways to minimize a necessary inconvenience as much as we possibly can,” said Hockenbury.
The city says short-term through access on Huey Street to and from Millennium Park will be permitted so residents can get to the City of Wildwood’s Happy Birthday America Celebration on July 3. Anyone planning to attend the event is encouraged to carpool, and to anticipate traffic delays.
