SUMMERFIELD, FL (352today.com) – A 74-year-old man from Sebring was fatally struck by a vehicle while attempting to cross U.S. Highway 441 near Summerfield early Saturday morning, according to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP).
The incident occurred at approximately 6:45 a.m. in the southbound lanes of U.S. 441 near SE 173rd Street. FHP troopers reported that the man was walking west across the highway when he stepped into the path of an oncoming sedan in the outside lane.
The vehicle, driven by a 44-year-old woman from Ocala, collided with the man on its front left side. The impact caused the sedan to veer off the road, where it eventually came to rest on the west grass shoulder.
Emergency responders, including Marion County Fire Rescue and the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, were quickly dispatched to the scene to assist FHP troopers in their investigation.
The name of the victim has not yet been released pending notification of next of kin, and authorities have not announced any charges related to the incident. The investigation into the fatal crash is ongoing.
