OCALA, FL (352today.com) — Who needs storks when you’ve got first responders, firefighters, and EMTs ready to step in during life’s most unexpected moments?
A new year means new beginnings, and on Jan. 2, 2025, a new life was brought into the world—though not in the most conventional manner. Ocala Fire Rescue answered the call, with firefighter Darius Sampson stepping up to demonstrate the critical role first responders play in the community by helping deliver a healthy baby.
The event unfolded in the early evening hours, and Ocala Fire Rescue (OFR) responded promptly.

“It was about 7:25 or 7:30 when we got the call, and usually when you get these calls, they’re just having contractions and we have time to get them to the hospital,” said Sampson. “It wasn’t the case this time. We get there, I get my gear. I’m there with my EMT partner, he was grabbing the airway bag and stuff like that, and as soon as he makes it into the house, the baby’s coming. He immediately screams out, ‘I can see the head.’ He had never experienced anything like that.”
A swift response and quick thinking were key to the successful delivery, creating a memorable experience for everyone involved. The first responders remained calm and encouraging, guiding the mother through the rapid delivery process.
“The baby let out a really loud cry, which was amazing, because we needed a healthy crying baby,” said Sampson. “So, she was immediately moving around and crying a lot.”
The delivery went smoothly, with no complications. Several family members, including the baby’s grandmother and aunt, were present to witness the special moment.
“It was just a magical moment,” Sampson said. “I will never forget it. It was nerve-racking.”
While this wasn’t Sampson’s first experience with a delivery, it was the first time he played such a hands-on role. His previous experience involved arriving just as the delivery concluded.
“It doesn’t happen often, so it was definitely mind-blowing,” Sampson added.
