GAINESVILLE, FL (352today.com) – When your child heads off to college, it can be challenging as a parent – even if the campus is only a short drive away.
The City of Gainesville is making the area around the University of Florida (UF) safer and more welcoming for students, parents, and teachers.
The Downtown Ambassador Program is new and helps make areas safer with friendly helpers. The Downtown Events Grant Program is also adding fun activities for students, helping them feel more connected to the community.
1. Enhancing Student Safety
Gainesville Police Department (GPD) maintains a strong law enforcement presence in collaboration with UF’s police force. Officers are stationed around the UF campus, downtown, and midtown areas, so that they can swiftly respond to any safety concerns.

The city put up more lights and cameras to help people see better and keep away crime. The Downtown Ambassador Program, backed by a $3.1 million contract, provides safety escorts and assistance. To request an escort, students and residents can call (352) 710-6406.
2. Addressing Homelessness Near Campus
Gainesville is working with shelters, social service organizations, and mental health professionals to assist homeless people while still enforcing city regulations to maintain public safety.
3. Impact on Parents of UF Students
One of the city’s goals is for parents of UF students to have a greater peace of mind. With more police officers, surveillance, and community programs in place, there is reassurance that your child is in a safer environment.
4. Reporting Safety Concerns
Students and parents are encouraged to use GPD’s emergency resources, including the GPD app, text-based reporting, and Crime Stoppers at 352-372-STOP. Public encampments can be reported via the myGNV app or online at mygnv.com.
5. Investing in Public Safety
For Fiscal Year 2025, Gainesville has dedicated $77.5 million to public safety, with $46.4 million directed toward GPD operations. The department continues investing in recruitment, training, and community policing to maintain safety for UF students.
