OCALA, FL (352today.com) – The sounds of a steel drum, the Gospel hymn I’ll Fly Away, and smooth jazz and blues floated through the air as visitors made their way around a sea of tents. Marion County Day, held March 29, 2025, offered something for everyone – from community resources to food trucks and local vendors.
The free community event drew a large crowd, celebrating the county’s founding on March 25, 1844.
“It’s such a beautiful day, and I’m so happy that we’re able to do it, and open it to the community, so they can come and enjoy the McPherson Campus and learn about all of the services the county has to offer,” said Mounir Bouyounes, Marion County Administrator. “Marion County has been here for 181 years and is going strong.”
Thousands turned out to explore the wide range of county services, enjoy live music, sample diverse food options, and let the kids enjoy the many activities in the dedicated kids’ zone.
“It’s a great time every year to spend time with the people that we work for, and to answer any questions about what we do, and try to figure out how we may be able to help them,” said Gregory C. Harrell, Marion County Clerk of Court and Comptroller.
The wholesome, family-friendly environment encouraged community interaction, with residents learning more about local resources while enjoying an atmosphere full of music, laughter, and smiling faces.
The Silver Springs Radio Club, a regular participant in Marion County Day, used the event to raise awareness and spark interest in amateur radio.
“We’re trying to get more youth involved with it,” said Kevin Young, KC7FPF. “If it doesn’t push, click or flash, they’re not really interested. So, once in a while we go out and do a demonstration in the schools about the different things. We can talk to anybody local on a VHF repeater or you can talk around the world on an HF.”
Terry Strey, KN4FMH, praised the county’s efforts, noting that the county does a great job with the event.
