The latest data from the National Digital Car Seat Check Form (NDCF) reveals that 74% of car seats inspected in 2023 were misused or installed incorrectly. Additionally, 25% of children were moved to booster seats too early, and 93.6% transitioned to seat belts before they were ready.

AAA urges caregivers to find the right seat, follow installation guidelines, and regularly inspect safety restraints. Registering the car seat for recall notifications is also recommended.

“Car seats are a crucial layer of protection for growing bodies,” said Jenkins. “Ensuring your child is in the correct car seat for their age and size will help safeguard their life.”

Pets also need thoughtful planning during travel. From hydration and comfort items to frequent exercise breaks, these measures help reduce stress and risk. Importantly, pets should never ride in the front seat due to airbag dangers. Crates, harnesses, or pet seat belts in the back seat or cargo area are best for their protection.
