UPDATE as of 8 a.m. Friday: In just two days, Lake Minneola High has exceeded its goal to raise $20,000 for the family of the student who died in a bike-bus crash.

As of 8 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 6, the GoFundMe account for Sherman Vannoy’s family shows 462 donations totaling $26,207. That exceeds the fundraising goal of $20,000.

Donations range from as little as $5 to the top donation of $2,000 (as of this update).

The fundraising page expresses gratitude on behalf of Vannoy’s family saying “Sherman’s family is so thankful for the love and prayers you’ve sent their way.”

A Celebration of Isaiah’s Life will be held on Saturday, October 7, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Real Life Church, Building A, 1501 Steve’s Road, in Clermont.

UPDATE 10/4: On Tuesday, Lake Minneola High announced it’s helping raise funds for the family of Sherman Vannoy, the student killed in a bike-bus crash on Monday.

The online fundraiser says, “All monies collected will go towards assisting the Vannoy family with funeral expenses for our Fallen Hawk Sherman Vannoy.”

The school also announced in a Facebook post that it’s making resources available to parents. A mental health professional will be available to parents today, Wednesday, Oct. 4, from 4 to 6 p.m. at the school’s media center.

“We understand that these circumstances can be tough on everyone so we want to make sure that PARENTS also get the opportunity to get additional support,” shared the school.

ORIGINAL 10/2: A 17-year-old student at Lake Minneola High School was hit and killed by a school bus in Lake County early Monday morning.

According to Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), a 78-year-old woman from Leesburg was driving the bus southbound on Hancock Road near Fox Trail Avenue around 7 a.m. The student was riding his bicycle on the sidewalk of Hancock Road and approached the stop sign at the intersection. As the school bus driver attempted to make a left turn into the school, she and the student collided, according to troopers. FHP says the Lake County School District confirmed the student was 17-year-old Sherman Vannoy.

The student was transported to South Lake Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Monday afternoon, they also announced on their Facebook page that all on-campus events were cancelled due to the incident.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office shared their condolences on their Facebook page.

“Our sincerest condolences go out to the family and friends of the teenager tragically killed this morning,” said the sheriff’s office.

The crash still remains under investigation.
