MARION COUNTY, FL (352today.com) – Behind every badge is a story — and on May 15, Marion County will pause to honor those whose stories ended in the line of duty. As part of National Police Week, local law enforcement agencies are inviting the community to join them for a powerful morning of remembrance at the Fallen Officer Memorial on Peace Officers’ Memorial Day.

In the State of Florida, there have been over 950 recorded officers and 61 K-9s who have died in the line of duty — the causes of death range from heart attack to gunfire. Over 440 police officers have died from gunshot wounds, the most prominent cause of all end-of-watch incidents.
