MARION COUNTY, FL (352today.com) — Two people were killed early Saturday morning in a fiery single-vehicle crash along Interstate 75, just north of County Road 484, according to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP).
FHP reported that an SUV was traveling northbound in the right lane near mile-marker 341 when, for reasons still under investigation, the driver lost control of the vehicle. The SUV veered off the roadway onto the east shoulder, where it struck the concrete base of a light pole with its front right side.
Following the impact, the vehicle caught fire and became fully engulfed in flames.
Marion County Fire Rescue responded to the scene and confirmed that both occupants, a female driver and a male passenger, sustained fatal injuries and were pronounced dead at the scene.
FHP said positive identification of the victims is still pending as the investigation continues.
