OCALA, FL (352today.com) — A West Port High School teacher is being recognized not just for her work in the classroom, but for the profound impact she’s had on her students’ lives.
Diana Fye, a ninth-grade environmental sciences teacher at West Port, was named the latest recipient of the “Thank a Teacher” award, a collaborative initiative by HCA Florida Ocala Hospital, HCA Florida West Marion Hospital, and the Public Education Foundation of Marion County (PEFMC).
A surprise honor at school
The award was presented during a surprise event at the school on May 21. HCA Florida Ocala Hospital CEO Alan Keesee and HCA Florida West Marion Hospital CEO Isaiah Zirkle were on hand to personally congratulate Fye, along with Marion County School Board Chairwoman Lori Conrad, board members Allison Campbell, Ph.D., and Nancy Thrower, Interim Superintendent Danielle Brewer, and other education and foundation leaders.
According to PEFMC Executive Director Meghan Magamoll, Fye is the first teacher chosen solely based on student nominations. At least eight students submitted nominations praising her compassion and guidance. One wrote, “You are one of the best teachers I’ve had in a few years. Thank you for helping with hard time(s) at school and in class. Thank you so much.”
A lasting impact
“HCA Florida Healthcare created ‘Thank a Teacher’ to recognize educators who make a significant contribution to improving the lives of students,” said Keesee.
“Through their nominations, Diana’s students voiced approval for her efforts to shepherd them in both academics and in life,” added Zirkle.
“The campaign is an opportunity to show appreciation to teachers through shared words of gratitude,” said Magamoll. “Saying ‘thank you’ is a simple, yet priceless, way to acknowledge their hard work.”
