OCALA, FL (352today.com) – Better Together, a nonprofit organization focused on preventing foster care and supporting families in crisis, recently hosted its annual “Doing Good Together” reception at the Country Club of Ocala. The event recognized local volunteers, supporters and community partners who have made a meaningful difference through their involvement with the organization.

Recognizing Local Impact

As part of a statewide effort, Better Together hosts regional receptions to celebrate individuals and groups who help fulfill its mission. Honorees received a unique baseball card-style award to commemorate their contributions.

2025 North Central Florida Honorees:

  • Host Family of the Year: Laura and Thomas Gerds – Recognized for welcoming children into their home while supporting fellow volunteers.
  • Champion for Strong Families: Straight Line Construction – Owners Dan and Deanna Eckhard were honored for raising awareness and offering consistent support.
  • Community Partner of the Year: Interfaith Emergency Services – Acknowledged for prioritizing families in crisis and thinking creatively to meet community needs.
  • Church Partner of the Year: Church of Hope – Led by Pastor Mark Cummins, the church was celebrated for living out service and support in the community.
  • DCF Partner of the Year: Amy Cook – A supervisor who not only connects families to Better Together but also volunteers at events.
  • Mentor of the Year: Tinslie Pickett – Honored for her dedication to walking alongside families with encouragement and accountability.
  • Super Volunteer of the Year: Alecia Randolph – Recognized for her consistent presence, leadership and servant’s heart.
  • Staff Appreciation Award: Tara Williams – Commended for her deep commitment to Better Together’s mission and families.

Building Strong Families

“Our Better Together team is so grateful for the donors, volunteers, partners and advocates who stand in the gap and support us in fulfilling our mission,” said CEO Megan Rose. “It was an honor to recognize them for their generosity and unwavering support this year.”

Better Together provides short-term hosting for children and job assistance for parents facing crisis situations. Since its inception, the organization has served over 10,000 children, with 98% remaining out of foster care, and has helped more than 40,000 job seekers find employment through faith-based job fairs.
