SUMTER COUNTY, FL (352today.com) – We’re deep into the heat of summer now, which means there are fewer folks from out of town on Sunshine State roads–which presents an opportunity to get some maintenance roadwork done.
Sumter County proper and the City of Wildwood have both announced that their respective pavement management and rehabilitation programs will begin the week of July 20, weather permitting.
Sumter County’s Pavement Management Program will reportedly invest $6.4 million in roadway improvements throughout the rest of the summer. The money comes from local tax revenues through the county’s Capital Outlay Reserve Fund, and will be reinvested in the community to the tune of 30 miles of improvements meant to improve safety and prolong the life of existing roadway infrastructure.

“Maintaining roads before they significantly deteriorate helps extend pavement life and reduces long-term costs for taxpayers,” said Debra Snyder, Public Works director, in a statement. “Investing in preventive maintenance allows us to maximize the value of every dollar while providing residents with safer, smoother roadways.”
Sumter County will release a construction schedule once it’s finalized, and residents can find out more via the county’s online project tracker.
For its part, the City of Wildwood will be working on roads within the downtown/central area, reinvesting $1.2 million in city roadway infrastructure.
“Wildwood has been blessed in recent years with the resources to maintain newer streets in excellent condition, but that wasn’t always the case,” said City Manager Jason McHugh. “Road projects are among the first on the chopping block when finances are tight, ultimately affecting a community’s quality of life in the long term.”
