OCALA, FL (352Today.com) – At Ward-Highlands Elementary School and Fort King Middle School, bringing a packed lunch was never just about bringing a meal. Back in the day, it was currency.
Maybe it still is.
In second grade, I learned that some kids in the cafeteria would rather have a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and a pack of Shark Bites than whatever mystery meat, rubbery square pizza, or fish sticks the cafeteria was serving that day. Lucky for me, I didn’t mind the school food. So, I started bartering.
“I’ll trade you my mom’s PB&J for that pizza square,” I told a classmate one Friday.
The deal was done, and a tradition began. For most of my public school years, I traded my packed lunch for whatever looked better on the cafeteria tray. Fridays–Pizza Day–were the best. I had three reliable trading partners, and I still remember those exact exchanges.
Looking back, the snacks and drinks that made those trades possible (and made lunch the most exciting part of the day) were pure ’90s and early-2000s nostalgia for me. So, in honor of the back-to-school season, here are 12 of the ones that ruled the lunch table.
1. The Ecto Cooler
The bright green Hi-C drink tied to Ghostbusters and Slimer. Sweet, citrusy, and unapologetically artificial.
2. Dunkaroos
Cookies + a tub of frosting (sprinkles if you were lucky). The lunchbox status symbol.
3. Shark Bites
Chewy fruit snacks shaped like sharks—the real thrill was hunting for the rare white one. (And yes, they were excellent trading stock.)
4. Bugles
Cone-shaped corn snacks perfect for wearing on your fingers like edible claws.
5. Fruit Stripe Gum
The zebra-packaged gum with tattoos inside… that lost its flavor in about 11 seconds.
6. Butterfinger BBs
Bite-sized Butterfinger pieces, crispy, peanut-buttery, and gone way too fast.
7. Fruitopia
Those colorful, “fruit-inspired” drinks with names like Strawberry Passion Awareness. Peak ’90s branding.
8. 3D Doritos
Puffy, three-dimensional Doritos that felt futuristic at the time.
9. Super Donuts
Those individually wrapped, slightly dense school cafeteria donuts (the Super Bakery kind).
10. Handi-Snacks
Crackers, processed cheese, and the iconic red plastic spreader stick.
11. Surge
The neon-green citrus soda that felt like it was made for extreme sports… and elementary school.
12. Kudos Bars
Chocolate-coated granola bars that somehow felt like a “healthier” choice while still tasting like pure candy. Quiet lunchbox flex.
