LAKE COUNTY, FL (352today.com) – Lake County’s Office of Communications announced this morning that construction work has begun on Britt Road, the Mount Dora thoroughfare that became impassible back in October 2024, when Hurricane Milton struck North Central Florida.
The hurricane washed out more than 100 feet of roadway, instigating “an extensive planning and coordination process” across multiple agencies. Britt Road is designated as a Federal Aid Highway, which means it qualifies for financial assistance from the federal government for repairs and maintenance through the Federal-Aid Highway Program (FAHP).
“After overcoming what felt like insurmountable odds, I’m incredibly relieved to see that crews have officially begun work on Britt Road,” said Leslie Campione, chairman of the Lake County Board of County Commissioners. “This has been a project like none other in that we did not have enough property to begin repairing Britt Road due to the ravine that had been cut underneath the road, and it took a year of negotiations to acquire property, and due to the unique environmental and hydrological characteristics, it another 7 months to get permits from other agencies and meet the requirements needed to obtain grant funding for reconstruction costs. I can’t wait until Britt Road is fully reopened to serve the community again.”
The county expects the restoration of the thoroughfare to be done in October 2026–perhaps even on the two-year anniversary of its destruction?
