OCALA, FL (352Today.com) – For some students, jumping online after school to finish a research paper, geometry quiz, or group project is easy because internet is readily available. For students who do not have internet at home, however, it’s not so easy.

But students in Marion County public schools who struggle with homework because they lack reliable home internet may have a more affordable option than they realize.

Discounted high-speed internet plans from Spectrum and Xfinity, starting as low as $14.95 to $15 a month, are available to qualifying households. The Marion County Local Technology Planning Team has begun distributing flyers with details about the programs at school orientations, libraries, community centers, and several public schools, including Stanton-Weirsdale Elementary.

At schools like Stanton-Weirsdale, some teachers have limited digital homework assignments because not every student has consistent internet access at home. The flyers aim to close that gap by pointing families toward the low-cost plans.

Spectrum’s option starts at $15 a month for speeds up to 50 Mbps and includes parental controls, a security suite, and a modem. Xfinity’s plan begins at $14.95 a month for speeds up to 75 Mbps and includes public Wi-Fi hotspots, unlimited data, and a gateway. QR codes on the flyer link directly to each provider’s application page so families can check eligibility and apply.

Free or reduced-price lunch status is one common way to qualify, though each company sets its own criteria. All Marion County Public Schools students currently receive free breakfast and lunch through the Community Eligibility Provision, so no separate income paperwork is required for meals. Families interested in the internet discounts should still review the specific eligibility rules on Spectrum’s and Xfinity’s websites and apply directly with the providers.

“Review the eligibility requirements via the internet service providers’ websites and apply via the providers’ applications,” said Stacie Causey, public information specialist for Marion County.

The discounted plans can also help college students, including those at the College of Central Florida. Causey emphasized that households should contact Spectrum or Xfinity directly to confirm current pricing, plan details, and qualification.
