BELLEVIEW, FL (352today.com) – The City of Belleview invites the community to gather in remembrance for the 2026 Freedom Walk, commemorating the 25th anniversary of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. The event will be held on Friday, September 11, 2026, beginning at 6:00 p.m. at the Belleview Community Center.
The Freedom Walk honors the nearly 3,000 lives lost on September 11, 2001, while recognizing the courage and sacrifice of the first responders, members of the United States Armed Forces, and countless Americans who answered the call to serve in the aftermath of the attacks. As the nation marks a quarter century since one of the most defining days in American history, the City of Belleview invites the community to come together in reflection, gratitude, and unity.
The evening’s program will feature remarks from Mayor Christine Dobkowski, State Representative Ryan Chamberlin, and State Senator Stan McClain, who will reflect on the impact of September 11 and the importance of preserving its lessons for future generations.
Attendees will also experience a historical presentation highlighting the events of September 11, 2001, and their lasting impact on the nation. As part of this year’s special 25th anniversary observance, guests will have the opportunity to view and sign a commemorative remembrance book featuring a timeline of the day’s events and honoring every individual who lost their life in New York, at the Pentagon, and aboard Flights 11, 77, 93, and 175. The book will provide attendees with an opportunity to leave personal messages of reflection and gratitude, creating a lasting tribute from the Belleview community.
Representatives from local public safety agencies, veterans organizations, civic groups, and community organizations will join residents in honoring those who perished and those who continue to serve our nation and communities with dedication and courage. Following the ceremony, weather permitting, participants will take part in the traditional Freedom Walk through Lake Lillian Park.
Mayor Christine Dobkowski said the 25th anniversary serves as an especially meaningful opportunity to remember the lives forever changed on September 11.
“Twenty-five years have passed since the attacks of September 11, yet the memories remain as vivid today as they were that morning,” Dobkowski said. “This anniversary reminds us that while time moves forward, our commitment to remembering those who lost their lives must never fade. I encourage families, veterans, students, and residents of all ages to join us as we ensure the legacy of September 11 is never forgotten.”
City Administrator Mariah Moody said the annual event provides an important opportunity to educate younger generations while strengthening the community’s commitment to service and remembrance.
“Today’s students were born after September 11, making it increasingly important that we continue sharing the history of that day and the lessons it taught our nation,” Moody said. “The Freedom Walk is an opportunity to connect generations, honor sacrifice, and reinforce the service and resilience that emerged from tragedy. The commemorative remembrance book and historical presentation help preserve these stories so they continue to educate and inspire long into the future.”
Community Engagement Liaison Robert Vass said this year’s commemorative book adds a deeply personal element to the evening’s remembrance.
“The 25th anniversary is a milestone that deserves thoughtful reflection,” Vass said. “This year’s commemorative book was created to ensure every person lost on September 11 is remembered by name while giving those who attend the opportunity to become part of that remembrance. We hope attendees leave with a deeper understanding of the events of that day and a renewed appreciation for the freedoms we enjoy because of the sacrifices made by so many.”
