SUMTER COUNTY, FL (352today.com) – A lot of us don’t exactly know what we’re supposed to do with certain types of household waste, and we sometimes get conflicting information from friends or (gasp) the internet.
Can I put my paint in the dumpster? What about old phones and dead laptops? Where do I get rid of used automotive oil?
Often, these items just sit in our homes and on our property until we sort of forget about them. But municipalities across the country provide regular drop-off days for stuff like this, and if you live in Sumter County, your next opportunity to rid yourself of questionable non-garbage garbage is coming up on Saturday, November 7, 2026, in the form of the Amnesty Day Household Hazardous Waste and Electronics Collection.
“Amnesty Day is funded through property taxes and is part of Sumter County’s ongoing commitment to promoting responsible waste disposal and protecting the community’s natural resources,” read an announcement. “By providing residents with a safe and accessible disposal option at no additional cost, the County encourages practices that help safeguard the environment and maintain a clean, healthy community.”
So, what can you bring, and what can’t you?
Accepted items include:
- Automotive fluids and batteries
- Herbicides
- Propane tanks (up to 25 pounds)
- Cleaners
- Household electronics (TVs, VCRs, computers, etc.)
- Rechargeable household batteries
- Latex and oil-based paints
- Solvents
- Pool chemicals
- Other eligible household hazardous materials
Do not bring:
- Biological/infectious waste
- Explosives
- Radioactive waste
- Empty paint cans
- Tires
Sumter’s Amnesty Day Household Hazardous Waste and Electronics Collection takes place from from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Lake Okahumpka Park, located at 6085 E. State Road 44 in Wildwood.
The county asks that you prepare your materials for safe transportation, such as putting items leaking liquids in plastic bags before boxing them and keeping everything potentially harmful out of the cabin of your vehicle.
