GAINESVILLE, FL (352today.com) – UPDATE 11/27: We’ve learned new information in the case that brought the Alachua County Bomb Squad out on Thanksgiving Day.

The Gainesville Police Department (GPD) says family members helping their grandpa clean out his garage found a hand grenade.

A GPD spokesperson says family members put the grenade in an ammo box and called police.

GPD says the Alachua County Bomb Squad determined the grenade was live.

The bomb squad secured it and removed it for safe disposal.

UPDATE 11/24: Gainesville police say the scene is clear and the bomb squad from the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office has safely removed it.

ORIGINAL 11/23: The Gainesville Police Department (GPD) is asking people to stay away from the area around Northeast 10th Terrace and Northeast 12th Avenue.

GPD says old military ordnance may have been found at a home in that area.

They along with the Alachua County Bomb Squad are on the scene assessing whatever was found and determining the best course of action to remove it.

As a safety precaution, they’re asking everyone to avoid the area until further notice.
