MARION COUNTY, FL (352today.com) – The Marion County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) says a 17-year-old was transported to Florida on Tuesday to face charges including attempted homicide stemming from a shooting at a truck stop in Reddick last summer.

The sheriff’s office says Jaquavius McClain was extradited from Lowndes County, Georgia, to the Marion County Jail and has been charged with attempted homicide, attempted carjacking with a firearm, and possession of a firearm by an individual under the age of 18.

The sheriff’s office says McClain was involved in an incident that occurred on July 5, 2023, at a Petro Truck Stop located at 7401 West Highway 318 in Reddick. They say deputies responded to an attempted armed carjacking and shooting, and say when they arrived, they discovered a man shot in the head.

Marion County Fire Rescue (MCFR) crews responded to provide medical attention to the male, who was transported to the hospital.

MCSO detectives say the victim and his wife were “targeted” while they were parked at the gas pumps. They say a GMC pickup truck pulled up beside them and McClain and co-defendant Christopher Riley got out of the truck. MCSO says that’s when Riley took a gun from McClain and shot the man two times, leaving him critically injured.

The sheriff’s office says McClain and Riley left the scene in the truck. Detectives say they learned that earlier that day, both were also involved in an attempted carjacking in Clearwater. In addition to that incident, they say the GMC pickup truck was stolen during an armed carjacking in Valdosta, Georgia, on the same day as the shooting.

MCSO says the Valdosta Police Department (VPD) was able to locate the stolen pickup truck and both McClain and Riley were arrested on July 7 in Lowndes County, Georgia.

According to Marion County jail records, McClain is being held without a bond. Riley is awaiting extradition.
