OCALA, FL (352today.com) – As we gather to celebrate America and all of the freedoms we enjoy, it is imperative that we remember the safety of ourselves and others.
From backyard barbeques to community fireworks and patriotic drone events like the one at Tuscawilla Park on July 4th, these celebrations often include food and beverages – including alcoholic drinks which are sometimes consumed in larger quantities during the festivities.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Fatality Analysis Reporting System for the years 2013 to 2017, 131 individuals lose their lives in alcohol-related crashes each holiday, in contrast to 25 fatalities during non-holiday periods.

The statistics are on the rise; MoneyGeek reports that fatalities due to driving under the influence were 23% higher in 2021 compared to 2016. Independence Day and other summer holidays have the highest incidence of DUI, yet the issue of impaired driving is also significant from Thanksgiving through New Year’s Day.
Fortunately, as a last resort, AAA is back with its Tow-to-Go service. While the auto club maintains that you should designate a driver, they are offering this free service to both members and non-members.
AAA states on its website that there are multiple benefits of Tow-to-Go, and offers the following information:
- Free confidential ride available to AAA Members and non-members.
- The AAA tow truck transports the vehicle and driver home or somewhere safe within 10 miles.
- Appointments cannot be scheduled in advance. It is designed as a safety net for those that did not plan ahead by choosing a designated driver before celebrating.
- In some situations, AAA may need to make other arrangements to get an impaired individual a safe ride home.
- The service may not be available in rural areas or during severe weather conditions.
AAA says on its website that the program, since its inception in 1998, has effectively removed almost 30,000 impaired drivers from the roads.
So… how do you get a ride?
Beginning Wednesday, July 3, at 6 p.m. through Monday, July 8, at 6 a.m., AAA says that you can reach Tow-to-Go by calling 855-2-TOW-2-GO or 855-286-9246.
Again, AAA stresses that this service cannot be scheduled in advance and is only to be used as a last resort.
