OCALA, FL (352today.com) – As Floridians prepare to set their clocks forward one hour this Sunday for Daylight Saving Time, AAA – The Auto Club is warning drivers about the increased risks of drowsy driving.

“The time change impacts daylight hours and sleep patterns, raising the risk of drowsy driving, which can contribute to a dangerous crash,” said Mark Jenkins, AAA spokesperson. “Even though it is only a one-hour difference, people may experience what feels like a mini-jetlag.”

Common signs of drowsy driving include difficulty keeping eyes open, drifting between lanes, and trouble recalling the last few miles driven. Jenkins also stressed the importance of extra caution near schools, as darker mornings can make children less visible to drivers.

A study published in Current Biology found fatal crashes increased by 6% in the week following the time change. To stay safe, AAA urges drivers to get enough rest, avoid distractions like cell phones, obey speed limits, and never drive under the influence.

Seatbelt use is also critical. A recent AAA analysis found child car seat usage declines after age three, highlighting the need for proper safety measures.
