GAINESVILLE, FL (352today.com) – The Gainesville Police Department (GPD) says Abraham Lincoln Middle School was placed in a “secure status” on Monday as officers searched for two suspicious people.
GPD says the incident started after a resident reported two suspicious persons behind their neighbor’s house in the area of Heartwood Road.
Police say officers discovered the home had been broken into and a handgun along with 2 loaded magazines were stolen.
Officers say they established a tactical perimeter after observing the two people running into a nearby wooded area.
“While maintaining the perimeter, officers heard the distinct sound of a handgun “racking” or in other terms, possibly being loaded,” said GPD in a Facebook post.
GPD says the two tried to get away, leading officers on a brief foot pursuit.
Officers say they found a loaded 9mm handgun in the waistband of a suspect who is 13 years old.
“We are relieved to report that there was no use of force during the apprehension,” said GPD.
Police say credited the resident who reported the incident as being instrumental to the outcome of the situation.
“Your quick action helped ensure the safety and security of our community, and directly prevented gun violence in our City of Gainesville,” said GPD. “If you see something unusual or suspicious, don’t hesitate to report it. Together, we can keep our Gainesville safe.”
Police urge all gun owners to securely store firearms.
“Safeguarding your weapons not only protects your family but also prevents potential misuse by unauthorized individuals,” said GPD.
