ALACHUA COUNTY, FL (352today.com) – The county’s Foster Grandparent Program (FGP) is looking for seniors to serve as positive role models for local students in Alachua County Public Schools (ACPS), charter schools, childcare centers and after-school programs.

FGP’s low-income senior (55 years old and over) volunteers must be able to mentor and tutor children who have special needs or are living in circumstances that limit their academic, social, or emotional development.

FGP hopes to enable its volunteers to stay active, both physically and mentally, while helping children in need. Foster grandparents will also have opportunities to meet new people and learn new things along the way. FGP’s goal is to enhance the self-esteem of both students and their foster grandparents.

In addition to the positive experience, FGP volunteers will receive a non-taxable stipend of $4 per hour, as well as financial reimbursement for meals and travel (up to 20 miles per day). Supplemental medical insurance, automobile insurance, annual physical examinations, and paid personal leave benefits will be provided.
