Professional Background

Latrell Simmons has worked in law enforcement for 26 years, dedicating his time to the people of Alachua County. He has held several executive-level positions, including Major of Operations, Major of Support Services, Chief Inspector, Assistant Jail Director, and Security Operations Commander (DOJ).

Simmons says he is dual certified in law enforcement and corrections and is a graduate of the FBI National Academy.

Simmons resume indicates he joined the University of Florida Police Department in March of 2022 as a Captain assigned to the Support and Community Services Divisions. He serves as a Major in Support Services, Community Services, and Administrative Support Services Divisions.

What prompted you to run for election?

Simmons: “The citizens of Alachua County deserve a sheriff who is dedicated to serving the needs of all citizens. One who is a proven leader with experience, and a commitment to transparency, accountability, and community engagement. I believe in fostering trust between law enforcement and the community through proactive outreach and responsive service. I am committed to implementing policies that prioritize fairness and equity. Ultimately, I am running to ensure that every resident of Alachua County feels safe and supported by their Sheriff’s Office. As Sheriff of Alachua County, I will bring proven leadership to the position on day one!”

What are the biggest public safety issues in Alachua County and how do you plan to attack them, if elected?

Simmons: “As Sheriff, addressing gun violence is a paramount concern for me. Ensuring the safety of our citizens is non-negotiable. I am committed to actively engaging with neighborhoods, meeting community members face-to-face, and working together to devise effective strategies to enhance safety.”

He goes on to say that he recognizes that many communities affected by high crime rates lack essential resources.

“I will collaborate closely with community organizations to bring critical services such as childcare, access to nutritious food, reliable transportation, job opportunities, higher education opportunities, healthcare services, and more to these neighborhoods. By addressing these foundational needs, we can create a safer and more supportive environment for all residents. Together, through community-driven initiatives and partnerships, we will strive to make meaningful improvements that positively impact the safety and well-being of our neighborhoods.”

Recruiting and retention of law enforcement personnel is hard across the country, what’s your plan to hire and keep men and women working for the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office?

Simmons says he is focusing on five goals to expand the public’s knowledge of law enforcement and improve morale in the department:

  • Strengthening recruitment efforts through community engagement (youth programs and outreach programs), enhanced recruitment strategies (targeted advertising and recruitment incentives), and diversification and inclusion (inclusive hiring practices and bias training).
  • Introducing competitive compensation and benefits for more enhanced benefits and career development opportunities.
  • Improving work environments by offering support programs for officers’ families, recognition programs for officers doing something right, and mental health support.
  • Providing effective training and development for new and existing recruits, including peer mentorship and leadership development opportunities.
  • Enhancing community relations through building trust with outreach initiatives.

Are there particular geographic areas/communities of Alachua County that you plan to prioritize if elected? And how will you help those areas thrive?

Simmons: “Throughout my 22+ years with the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office, I had the privilege of serving every corner of our county and beyond. I built and nurtured strong relationships with mayors, city managers, commissioners, police chiefs, and community members across all municipalities in Alachua County. These connections were instrumental in fostering collaboration and understanding within our community.”

What message do you have for criminals in Alachua County?

Simmons: “As the Sheriff of Alachua County, my message would be clear: our community is committed to safety and justice. Criminal activities undermine the well-being of our residents and disrupt the harmony of our neighborhoods. I am dedicated to enforcing the law and ensuring that those who engage in criminal behavior are held accountable.”

He goes on to say that his approach is not solely punitive.

“I believe in providing opportunities for rehabilitation and support to help individuals make positive changes in their lives. I am here to enforce the law, but I also want to support those who are willing to make a genuine effort to turn their lives around.”

Are there any other issues facing the department or community that you feel need to be addressed?

Simmons: “Homelessness is a community concern that impacts law enforcement and the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office directly. Many individuals are often arrested for minor offenses and brought to the Alachua County Jail which causes the jail population to increase and puts additional strain on employees and added costs to the budget. I will collaborate with community organizations and enhance training for deputies and other local law enforcement agencies.”

What is your pitch to the citizens of Alachua County?

Simmons says choosing the right candidate for sheriff is a pivotal decision.

He believes the most qualified candidate should:

  • Have a demonstrated history of effective leadership within law enforcement
  • Demonstrate a commitment to building strong relationships with community members
  • Prioritize the well-being and professional development of all employees

He says if voters thoroughly evaluate candidates against these criteria, they will select a sheriff who not only meets the technical and operational requirements of the role but also embodies the leadership qualities and commitment necessary to serve and protect the community effectively.

Anything else you’d like to add?

Simmons: “Vote! Vote! Vote! Our community depends on it!”
