Marion County Public Schools is set to host the Big Springs STEM Fair on February 5, 2025, at the Circle Square Cultural Center in Ocala. The event, taking place from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM with public viewing from 11:30 AM to 1:30 PM, will showcase the innovative research of young students from Marion and Sumter counties.

A total of 177 students from 16 local schools will present their independent research in 13 categories, ranging from Life Sciences and Earth Sciences to Robotics and Mathematics. These students, in grades 6 through 12, have worked tirelessly to develop their projects, which will be evaluated by over 100 community volunteers who will assist in judging the fair.

The fair’s awards ceremony will take place on February 7 at 6:30 PM in the MTI Browne Greaton Cole Auditorium. During the ceremony, 32 of the top projects will earn spots at the State Science and Engineering Fair in March, with 8 exceptional projects advancing to the International Science and Engineering Fair in May. Students in these competitions will vie for more than $10 million in scholarships, cash prizes, and other awards.

One standout participant this year is Miguel Secillano III from Vanguard High School. Secillano, a returning competitor, will present his project “TALK: With Your Hands, Year 2 – An American Sign Language Recognition Software,” building on his success at the 2024 International Science and Engineering Fair, where he placed 4th. His innovative application aims to teach American Sign Language using computer software.

The Big Springs STEM Fair has a long history of success, thanks in part to the efforts of Thomas Dann, the event’s director from 1973 to 2003. Even after his formal tenure, Dann continues to support the event as the Display and Safety Chairperson and a volunteer judge, ensuring a safe and motivating environment for the young scientists.

The Big Springs STEM Fair is made possible through the support of The Felburn Foundation, The Public Education Foundation of Marion County, The Broadcom Foundation, Marion County Public Schools, The Silver River Museum, and Sumter County Public Schools. These organizations are dedicated to promoting STEM education and fostering a passion for scientific discovery among students.
