REDDICK, FL. (352 Today) — A Marion County Sheriff’s Office deputy shot a suspect early Friday morning following a vehicle pursuit that began after a report of a suspicious person in Reddick. The shooting occurred after the suspect allegedly attempted to run over a deputy during the traffic stop. The suspect was hospitalized in stable condition, and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement is now investigating the incident.
According to the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a residence shortly before 3 a.m. regarding a report of a suspicious individual. Upon arrival, deputies observed a vehicle fleeing the scene at high speed and attempted to initiate a traffic stop.
The driver refused to comply, prompting a brief pursuit that ended near NW Gainesville Road, just north of Highway 329. At that location, authorities say the suspect refused to exit the vehicle and attempted to strike a deputy with the vehicle. In response, another deputy discharged their firearm, striking the suspect.
Despite being shot, the suspect continued to flee at a slow speed before being stopped by law enforcement in the 12600 block of North Highway 441. The suspect was transported to a nearby hospital in stable condition, according to MCSO.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement has been notified and is now leading the investigation into the shooting, as is standard procedure in officer-involved incidents.
Motorists are advised to expect traffic disruptions in the area of NW Gainesville Road, U.S. Highway 441, and Highway 329 as authorities continue their investigation. Drivers should allow for additional travel time and proceed with caution.
