OCALA, FL (352today.com) – CareerSource Citrus Levy Marion has expanded its free Creating Connections training program to prepare workers for high-demand careers in telecommunications infrastructure.

The initiative aims to improve broadband access for about 70,000 residents and businesses in rural counties needing high-speed internet. It is available at no cost to residents of Levy, Columbia, Dixie, Gilchrist, Hamilton, Jefferson, Lafayette, Madison, Suwannee, Taylor, and Union counties.

Training for fiber optics technicians and installers begins Feb. 24 with a one-week boot camp at the College of Central Florida Jack Wilkinson Levy Campus, located at 15390 U.S. Hwy 19, north of Chiefland. Participants will receive hands-on training and have the opportunity to earn three industry certifications, which typically cost $2,785. The program also provides support services, including travel assistance, uniforms, and tools.

The expanded program now includes training for CDL drivers/telecommunications equipment operators, network technicians, IT specialists, and project management.

Funding for Creating Connections comes from a $1.73 million grant under the federal Building Pathways to Infrastructure Jobs program. CareerSource CLM administers the initiative in collaboration with CareerSource North Florida and CareerSource North Central Florida.

Average annual wages in telecommunications are $48,000—10.5% higher than the regional average.

“Beyond the workforce component, this enhanced connectivity and access provides additional options for existing residents and prospective residents, as well as businesses, in helping rural and underserved communities grow,” said Michele Schulze, CareerSource CLM’s Creating Connections grant coordinator.

Fiber optics training is conducted by BDI DataLynk, a standards-based company offering Fiber Optic Association-sanctioned courses. FOA is the world’s largest professional society for fiber optics.
