ORIGINAL, 3/22/2024: The Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) is asking for your help identifying and locating a man who carjacked an ambulance early Friday morning in the Tampa area.
Troopers have released a nearly one-minute video from the ambulance’s in-car camera system showing the carjacker speeding up to 100 miles per hour, blowing through red lights, going airborne through an intersection and ultimately crashing. The video also shows the man destroying the ambulances laptop computer, ripping the visor off and throwing it out the window.
How it began
Troopers say around 2 a.m., a supervisor with a private ambulance service, spotted a vehicle that appeared to be involved in a crash on the Interstate 75 (I-75) southbound exit ramp to Interstate 4 (I-4) Westbound in Hillsborough County.
FHP says the supervisor checked on the individual involved and that’s when things went south.
Troopers say the ambulance driver rolled down his window to ask if everything was ok.
FHP says the driver of the crashed vehicle gained access to the ambulance.
“Once inside, the subject started fighting with the ambulance driver and took control of the vehicle,” said FHP in a news release. “The ambulance driver, fearing for his life, exited the vehicle and called 9-1-1.”
Troopers say as the man tried to get away in the stolen ambulance, he collided with a car on the ramp for Interstate 75 southbound to Interstate 4 westbound.
The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) responded to try to stop the man. FHP says deputies chased the ambulance but lost contact with it.
The ambulance’s in-car camera system reported a crash at 2:09 a.m.
Troopers say the man took off and they are now looking for him. The shirtless man appears to have a unique tattoo which may help in identifying him. If you can help troopers identify the man, you’re urged to call *FHP (*347) on your cell.
