ALACHUA COUNTY, FL (352today.com) – Take a hike! That’s what the Alachua County Environmental Protection Department (ACEPD) hopes you will do this Sunday.
To celebrate Florida Native Plant Month, an ecologist will lead a family-friendly, fall wildflower walk at Barr Hammock Preserve.
This free event will take place this Sunday, Oct. 29, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.
The hike is limited to 20 people. So, you must register in advance. To register, call 352-451-7818 or send an email to mneelands@alachuacounty.us.
“Many of Florida’s native plants flower in Autumn, and visitors can expect to see a variety of colorful blooms,” said ACEPD in a release.
Organizers say hikers should gather by the informational kiosk at the Barr Hammock Preserve South Trailhead, located at 300 SE 175th Ave. in Micanopy.
The Barr Hammock Preserve spans nearly 6,000 acres but the hike is only three miles.
Organizers state the terrain is generally flat, but they say you should wear comfortable walking shoes. They also encourage you to apply sun protection and bring plenty of water.
