OCALA, FL (352today.com) – The month of March shines a spotlight on the remarkable contributions of women throughout history. Women’s History Month serves as a reminder of the struggles, achievements, and determination of women who have paved the way for others in many different fields including science and politics to arts and activism.

The Genesis of Women’s History Month

Women’s History Month takes us back to the early 20th century, evolving from a single day—International Women’s Day—into a nationwide celebration for the entire month of March. It officially gained recognition in the United States in 1987, following a petition by the National Women’s History Project. This was a significant milestone in acknowledging women’s contributions and struggles throughout history.

Trailblazers in Women’s History

  • Marie Curie: She was the first woman to win a Nobel Prize and the only person to win in two different sciences—Physics and Chemistry.

  • Rosa Parks: She is known as the “mother of the civil rights movement.”  Her refusal to move from her seat on a Montgomery, AL bus was considered an act of defiance against racial segregation became a defining moment in the Civil Rights Movement.

  • Nellie Bly: She is the most famous American female reporter of the 19th century known for her exposé on the conditions of New York City asylum patients in 1887 where she actually went undercover as a patient herself.

These women, among countless others, have demonstrated courage, intelligence, and resilience, inspiring generations to come.

Ways to Celebrate Women’s History Month

  • Support Women-Owned Businesses: Make a conscious effort to purchase from women-owned businesses like SmallCakes Cupcakery & Creamery in Ocala.
  • Participate in Events: The College of Central Florida is hosting its 2024 International Women’s Day Celebration on Friday, March 8, from 11:30 a.m.-1:00 p.m. at its Ocala campus. Ocala/Marion County women in Law and Government will be honored.
