CITRUS COUNTY (352today.com) – The Citrus County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) is warning the public of a rising auto theft trend of some Dodge models nationwide.

The sheriff’s office put out an alert on its Facebook page warning owners of Dodge Chargers, Challengers, and Durangos – especially the Hellcat, Redeye, and Scat Pack models to take precautions to protect your vehicle.

“Subjects have gained access in the Dodge models mentioned by removing the windshield or side rear window and programming a generic key fob without the original to start the ignitions,” said the sheriff’s office.

CCSO says cases that have been investigated show that the vehicles being stolen were stripped or transported to be sold internationally for a significant profit.

According to CCSO, the auto theft trend has not yet reached Citrus County. But they want vehicle owners to be aware of the activity.

They are recommending two safety precautions:

  • using wheel locks on vehicle tires
  • parking your car in a way that will limit opportunities for quick access

If you ever see any suspicious activity, call the sheriff’s office at 352-249-2790.
