CITRUS COUNTY, FL (352today.com) – Citrus County received an $800,000 grant from the ASPCA (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals). The grant will go toward construction of a new Animal Services facility located at 3150 W. Woodland Ridge Dr. in Lecanto.

“We are very grateful for this generous award, and it really speaks to the ASPCA’s long-standing commitment to supporting communities that prioritize animal welfare,” said Colleen Yarborough, Animal Services Director. “We are honored and look forward to building a facility that truly reflects the commitment of our staff and volunteers.”

The animal shelter project is currently out to bid and is anticipated to come before the Board of County Commissioners for final approval in February. The new facility will total around 24,450 square feet, depending on final alternates chosen.

The new animal services facility will:

  • Address the need for increased capacity, reducing overcrowding.
  • Provide for necessary clinical care including spay/neuter services, preventive treatments and emergency response capabilities.
  • Create dedicated spaces that support animal intake, adoption services, administrative operations and public engagement.

“This partnership with the ASPCA represents a significant investment in Citrus County’s future for providing efficient and effective animal services for our community,” said Eric Head, Community Services Director.

County Administrator Steve Howard added, “This grant helps to ensure we can build a facility that meets today’s needs and anticipates the needs of tomorrow. It reflects the ASPCA’s confidence in our vision and dedication to the humane care of animals.”
