GAINESVILLE, FL (352today.com) – The City of Gainesville announced Monday that its finance director submitted her letter of resignation.

According to city officials, they will lose their Director of Financial Services, Sue Wang, on the first of December. They say Wang worked for the city for 16 months, helping to strengthen the city’s accounting controls and procedures.

She was first hired by City Manager Cynthia W. Curry in June of 2022 as Controller for General Government, but she filled the position as director shortly after that.

During her tenure, the city says Wang helped resolve a significant number of issues in regard to bank reconciliations, government accounting practices, and financial reporting.

“In successfully completing the City’s Fiscal Year 2021 and Fiscal Year 2022 external audits, Wang’s team corrected four of six findings and laid the groundwork to resolve the remaining two,” stated the city in a press release.

City officials say Wang also led the team navigate many problems and delays with financial reporting dating back to 2018.

“We are in a far different position now than we were two years ago,” said Curry. “Director Wang propelled us forward, bringing to the city many improvements in a very short period of time. She has left us in a good position, with a clear path forward and strong and reliable staff in place.”

The city says in her resignation letter, she thanked the city for the chance to serve. They say she has begun preparing her team for the transition while Curry begins to look for a new director.
