OCALA, FL (352today.com) – Think you can skip the seatbelt just because you’re in the back seat? Driving a big truck? Rolling down a quiet road at night? Think again.
Starting May 19 through June 1, local law enforcement across Florida — including here in Ocala and Marion County — will be stepping up patrols as part of the nationwide “Click It or Ticket” campaign, led by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Officers will be on the lookout for unbuckled drivers and passengers, issuing citations to anyone not properly restrained — including unbelted children.
Why It Matters
The goal of this campaign is simple: reduce preventable deaths and injuries from vehicle crashes by enforcing one of the most basic safety rules — wear your seatbelt.
Here’s what you need to know:
- Air bags aren’t enough.
Air bags are meant to work with seatbelts, not replace them. - You’re not invisible at night.
Law enforcement is trained to detect unbelted drivers after dark. In fact, nighttime crashes are more deadly—and targeted enforcement will reflect that. - Driving a truck won’t save you.
Pickup drivers are just as vulnerable in a crash. Don’t let the size of your vehicle give you a false sense of security. - The back seat isn’t a safety zone.
Rear-seat passengers without belts are eight times more likely to die or suffer serious injuries. Everyone, front and back, needs to buckle up.
The Bottom Line
Law enforcement wants zero excuses and full compliance. This isn’t about punishment—it’s about protection. Seatbelts are your first line of defense in a crash, and they only work if you wear them.
So, if you’re in a car between now and June 1 — day or night, front seat or back — click it. Or expect a ticket.
