OCALA, FL (352today.com) – The Humane Society of Marion County (HSMC) is dedicated to finding loving homes for homeless pets and promoting responsible pet ownership in the local community. As a nonprofit organization, they rely on the support of volunteers and donations to carry out their important mission.
Who They Are
The HSMC has been serving Marion County for over 30 years. Their animal shelter cares for hundreds of dogs and cats each year, providing them with food, veterinary care, and TLC while they await adoption. The organization is led by a passionate team of staff and volunteers committed to the wellbeing of all animals, including executive director Eddie Leedy.
“About five years ago, I was approached by the President of the Board, Roseann Morton, about becoming a board member,” says Leedy.

Leedy ended up joining the board and doing some volunteer work for the shelter, eventually becoming the interim director when Bruce Fishalow retired.
“Fast forward five years later, and here I am,” Leedy smiles.
Adopt a Furry Friend
Prospective pet owners can visit the Humane Society’s adoption center, located at 1705 NW 8th Ave. in Ocala, to meet the available dogs and cats.
“Animals are very resilient, you know, and very forgiving,” Leedy shares. “Some of these animals, when you know their back story – and a lot of times we don’t – but when we do know their back story and the fact that they’re willing to love and trust so easily, it’s just amazing.”

The adoption process involves an application, meet-and-greet, and discussion to make sure that each animal is placed in the right home. Adoption fees help cover the costs of spaying/neutering, microchipping, and initial vaccinations.
“Many times, an adoption counselor will say, ‘I’d like to show you one of my favorites,’ because maybe they know that perfect couch potato for the person that’s just retired,” Leedy explains, adding that the next part of the process is to have the animal meet with everyone in the home.
Foster Opportunities
For those unable to commit to a full-time pet, the Humane Society’s foster program allows volunteers to provide temporary care for animals in need.
Leedy says that they only allow fostering of “bottle babies,” due to legal liability. “You get up through the night, take care of these kittens,” he says. “Same with bottle baby puppies. Anything under six months of age.” He adds that many of these fosters become “foster fails,” meaning that they ultimately adopt the animal they’ve fostered.
How You Can Help… and Win a Golf Cart
The Humane Society is currently running two promotions. First, anyone who adopts a pet during the month of November will be entered to win a brand-new golf cart, courtesy of Botero Carts.
Tickets are available for purchase online, and Leedy says that 100% of the proceeds will support the HSMC’s shelter and the animals in their care.

Additionally, the organization is waiving adoption fees for all senior pets (7+ years old) to help these distinguished animals find their perfect match.
