TALLAHASSEE, FL (352today.com) – Gov. Ron DeSantis unveiled his 2025-26 Focus on Fiscal Responsibility Budget recommendations, reinforcing Florida’s leadership in fish and wildlife conservation and outdoor recreation.
“Time and again, Governor DeSantis demonstrates leadership that distinguishes Florida from the rest of the nation,” said Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) Chairman Rodney Barreto. “Thanks to his steadfast support, Florida remains the Fishing and Boating Capital of the World and continues to provide exceptional recreational opportunities for residents and visitors.”

FWC Executive Director Roger Young emphasized the governor’s commitment to Florida’s fisheries, public access to outdoor activities, and law enforcement initiatives. “These investments are in addition to the Governor’s law enforcement pay plan, support of enhanced training capabilities for FWC officers, and funding to combat illegal immigration and drug trafficking,” Young said.
Florida’s outdoor recreation industry contributes nearly $15 billion annually to the state economy. With more than 34 million acres of land and over 12,000 square miles of water, sustaining these resources remains a priority.
Key Investments in Florida’s Conservation Efforts
- Restoring Apalachicola Bay Oysters: The budget allocates $30 million for FWC’s oyster habitat restoration, with an additional $10 million through the Department of Environmental Protection.
- Expanding Public Boat Ramps: A $9 million investment will improve public access to maritime facilities.
- Enhancing Artificial Reefs: The plan provides $10 million for reef development to boost marine habitats.
- Supporting Shooting Sports: With $9.2 million allocated for new shooting facilities and a proposed “Second Amendment Summer” tax holiday on firearms and ammunition.
- Advancing Fisheries Research: Increased funding supports Florida’s marine lab in Cedar Key and Red Snapper management statewide.
- Combatting Invasive Species: More than $3 million is dedicated to removing Burmese pythons from the Everglades.
- Strengthening Law Enforcement: The budget includes $5 million for a state training facility for waterborne rescues and $4.4 million for the FWC’s Special Immigration Law Enforcement Unit.
