SUMTER COUNTY, FL (352today.com) – In response to safety concerns raised by residents during public meetings, and following a comprehensive study of potential improvements, the Sumter County Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) has approved the design and construction of a directional median opening at the intersection of Morse Boulevard and Chitty Chatty Run/Sandalwood Condominiums.

The decision follows a detailed Intersection Alternatives Study conducted by Sumter County Public Works in coordination with its general consultant, Kimley-Horn, at the direction of the BOCC.

Alternatives Considered:

No-Build (Current Configuration): Maintains the full median opening with no changes.

Roundabout:

Would require significant redesign, right-of-way acquisition, and have environmental impacts.

Directional Median Opening (Selected):

Modifies the intersection to allow only specific turning movements, reducing conflict points and improving safety.

Why the Directional Median Was Chosen:

  • Improves safety and traffic flow
  • Avoids the need for additional property acquisition
  • Minimizes environmental impacts
  • Can be built within the existing right-of-way
  • Most cost-effective and least disruptive solution

โ€œThe directional median alternative offers an improvement in safety and traffic flow while avoiding adverse impacts of the other alternatives,โ€ said Matthew Tadlock, Assistant Public Works Director โ€“ Planning and Design. โ€œIt can be built within the existing right-of-way and avoids the need for additional property or environmental impacts, making it a balanced and responsible alternative based on the analysis.โ€

Timeline:

Design Start: July 2025

Construction Completion Target:

May 2026

Sumter County is committed to improving roadway safety while preserving community character and minimizing disruption to residents.
