OCALA, FL (352today.com) – Marion County, home to 72 horse breeds, celebrated its equine diversity during the All-Breed Parade and Hobby Horse Equestrian Games on Nov. 23 at the Florida Horse Park. The events were part of the Ocala Metro CEP’s Equine Initiative weekend, aimed at highlighting the equine industry’s economic and cultural impact.

Celebrating Miniature and Mighty Breeds

LBQH Stallions Station’s Tasha Byerly drove Little Boy Blue, a mini-Gypsy Cob, during the parade. “We compete against the big ones, and Little Boy Blue was the 2023 high point driving horse of the year,” Byerly said. Imported from England, the miniature cob exemplifies excellence in driving competitions.

Catherine York of Floridadales Stud showcased Griseburne Lady Jane, a Dales pony flown from the UK in 2018. “Dales ponies are critically endangered with fewer than 3,000 globally,” said York. Known for their versatility, they were used to haul artillery during both World Wars.

Spotlight on Tradition and Heritage

Susie, a 17-year-old Andalusian mare, participated for the third year. Owner Marti Aman wore traditional Spanish attire, celebrating the breed’s heritage. “They’re smart, athletic, and perfect for showcasing Ocala as the Horse Capital of the World,” Aman shared.

Hobby Horse Games and Special Tributes

The Hobby Horse Games followed the parade, with a special barrel racing event honoring Taylor Skromme, a late barrel racer whose family traveled from Chicago for the occasion.

The Equine Initiative weekend underscored Ocala’s thriving equine culture, blending education, tradition, and heartfelt moments for attendees of all ages.
