OCALA, FL (352today.com) – Marion County Animal Services (MCAS) won custody of 53 dogs that were rescued from deplorable conditions in an Ocala home. MCAS says many were found amidst squalor with their fur matted by their own waste and were confined to crates. They say several were malnourished and diagnosed with dental issues, as well.
Matthew Keel, who once ran the No BS Sanctuary, Inc. at his home at 5750 NW 6th St. reportedly tried appealing to social media followers for dog food and support but could not keep up with the number of dogs in his care.
The dogs, now in the custody of the county, have been receiving medical attention and the care they lacked. The county attorney’s office filed an emergency petition gaining custody over these dogs on Thursday, Feb. 8, after the judge heard expert testimony from the county’s in-house veterinarian who had personally cared for the dogs after their arrival at MCAS a week earlier on Thursday, Feb. 1.
The judge also ruled that Keel may not own any animals without first seeking permission from the court as an individual or as a corporation.
With over 400 animals currently in their care, MCAS is now appealing to the community for help. They say they have an urgent need for adopters, fosters, and volunteers to open their hearts and homes to a furry friend in need. Those wishing to take a look at potential new family members can find them on the MCAS website. Click “Adopt Pets.”
