OCALA, FL (352today.com) – Marion County Animal Services (MCAS) is closing out National Animal Care & Control Appreciation Week by visiting 352today with a very special guest: Rufus.
Rufus is a 6-year-old pup who has been with MCAS since December 2024. He’s one of about 180 calling the shelter home, but his personality is a stand-out. Friendly, calm, and affectionate, Rufus thrives on human connection. He’s known for leaning on his favorite people for comfort- and maybe even sitting on their feet just so they’ll stay close.

Since arriving at MCAS, Rufus has been a regular at community events, socializing well with adults and children. While he’s a great ambassador for the shelter, the busy, noisy environment can sometimes be overwhelming for him. What he truly wants is to be a loyal sidekick in a peaceful home.
One of Rufus’s favorite things? Car rides- especially if they’re leading to his forever home. And if you’re looking to add a new member to your family in time for Easter brunch, Rufus can be adopted for just $22 this month.
Throughout the week, MCAS has been honoring the hardworking animal control officers who serve on the front lines of animal welfare. These first responders are on call 24/7, 365 days a year.

They work with other first responders and step in during emergencies- such as arrests, hospitalizations, or unsafe living situations- to ensure pets are safe and cared for. They also investigate reports of neglect, hoarding, and illegal animal fighting, often working alongside the Marion County Sheriff’s Office when criminal charges are involved.

Not every call is dire. Sometimes, it’s a happy homecoming for a runaway dog thanks to the quick action of an officer. This week has been all about recognizing the vital work these officers do to protect both pets and the community.
