NORTH CENTRAL FLORIDA (352today.com) – On Monday afternoon, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) announced that Emergency Shoulder Use (ESU) is now active on eastbound I-4 and parts of northbound I-75. This step is taken to help reduce heavy traffic as people evacuate before the hurricane arrives.

The ESU initiative creates an extra travel lane on the left side of the interstate. This lane can be used by all vehicles except large trucks, buses, and trailers when the ESU is active. The goal is to speed up evacuation routes and enhance traffic flow for residents escaping possible threats.

FDOT requests that drivers stay alert to law enforcement officers and roadside signs, which will indicate when it is safe to enter or leave the shoulder.
