MARION COUNTY, FL (352today.com) – Marion County Animal Services has temporarily closed its cat adoption area following confirmed cases of panleukopenia, a highly contagious and potentially fatal disease affecting cats.

In response, several policy changes are in effect to limit the spread of the virus and protect feline health across the community.

Shelter-Neuter-Return (SNR) Update

Cats will only be accepted into the SNR program if they can be picked up the same day. Overnight stays are not permitted, and cats must arrive in traps. Weekly trap rentals are available by request.

Kitten Care Guidelines

The shelter is urging residents not to remove healthy kittens from their environment unless they are in immediate danger. “Kitnapping” – removing kittens prematurely – can lower their chance of survival. Kittens under eight weeks should not enter the shelter unless absolutely necessary. Residents are encouraged to foster at home when possible.

Fostering Opportunity

Short-term fostering is strongly encouraged. A two-week foster period allows cats to receive both an initial vaccine and booster, significantly lowering their risk of infection.

Rehoming Advice

The shelter advises pet owners to explore all other avenues before surrendering a cat. Residents are urged to use social media, rehoming websites, and personal networks to find new homes. If surrendering is unavoidable, owners should schedule vaccines prior to bringing the cat to the shelter.

Vaccination Reminder

Pet owners are encouraged to ensure their cats are up to date on vaccines. A list of low-cost vaccination resources is available at marionfl.org/animal.

Marion County Animal Services thanks the public for its continued cooperation and support during the temporary changes.
