MARION COUNTY, FL (352today.com) – Fire crews spent Sunday mopping up hot spots and checking containment lines around the Shanty 2 Fire near Salt Springs. According to the U.S. Forest Service, fire activity was minimal, and lines are holding strong. A total of 41 acres were addressed.
On Monday, if conditions allow, crews plan to expand the southern perimeter to a wider containment line. Cooler overnight temperatures may cause smoke to settle near the ground, especially along CR-314 and FL-19. Drivers should use caution and report low visibility to *347 (*FHP).
Updated Sunday, May 18, at 3:43 p.m.: Firing operations on the Shanty 2 Fire are now finished, and crews are working to cool hot spots and monitor the area.
You may still see moderate smoke along FL-19 south of Salt Springs as the fire slowly burns out remaining fuels. Drivers should stay alert and use caution if smoke reduces visibility.
Originally published at 11:08 a.m.: Firefighters in the Ocala National Forest are expanding containment efforts around the Shanty 2 Fire, located south of Salt Springs near the intersection of FL-19 and CR 314. According to the U.S. Forest Service, crews began a tactical interior firing operation on Sunday to strengthen control lines and reduce hazardous fuels.
The fire, which has burned through pine needle litter and small root systems on the forest floor, held within its existing footprint overnight. However, hot spots remain, prompting officials to take preemptive action to prevent further spread. The operation involves deliberately igniting small, well-spaced patches of forest to allow low-intensity flames to consume dry fuels in a controlled manner.
Officials say this method may expand the fire’s footprint to approximately 100 acres but is necessary to improve long-term containment. The process will help prevent creeping heat from crossing containment lines and provide a buffer for the nearby Salt Springs community.
Fire activity and response
- Personnel on scene: 50+
- Resources deployed: 6 engines, 2 Type 1 heavy helicopters, 2 Type 3 helicopters, 4 bulldozers, and 4 UTVs
- Firefighters remain in an elevated state of readiness due to ongoing hotspots and changing weather conditions, including afternoon sea breeze effects that could produce wind gusts up to 20 mph.
