NORTH CENTRAL FLORIDA (352today.com) – After the recent hurricanes, the Florida Forest Service (FFS) is warning people in the affected areas of Florida to be very careful when burning debris piles. Since many residents are still without power and are using open windows for fresh air, there is a greater chance of problems caused by smoke

FFS is reminding residents to consider their neighbors when burning storm debris, as smoke can travel far. It’s important for everyone to follow safety guidelines to protect both the community and the environment.

Debris Burning Guidelines:
  1. Pile Size: Burn piles should be no larger than 8 feet in diameter.
  2. Timing: All fires must be completely extinguished one hour before sunset to prevent uncontrolled fires during the night.
  3. Setbacks: Fires must be kept at a safe distance from your home, nearby forests, and roadways. These setbacks are important to prevent fires from spreading or blocking road visibility.

The FFS wants residents to remember that these precautions are important for safety and show respect for neighbors who are still facing the effects of the hurricane. Many homes have open windows, which can let smoke in and create discomfort or health issues.
