SUMTER COUNTY, FL (352today.com) – August is Clear the Shelters Month, and animal shelters across the state have been running special adoption events all month long. On Saturday, Aug. 26, Sumter County Animal Services (SCAS) will take its turn to find homes for nearly 300 dogs and cats.
The shelter says it has seen an increase in pet adoptions during August’s Clear the Shelters Month campaign, an annual event cosponsored by NBC and Telemundo. However, there are still more animals that need homes.

“Although our adoptions are up, we continue to receive animals at the shelter and want to encourage everyone to stop by and meet their new best friend,” said Stephen Kennedy, Sumter County’s assistant county administrator. “While we are excited for our Aug. 26 event, don’t hesitate to stop by before then.”
Sumter County officials encourage potential adopters to consider the benefits of pet ownership. They say having a furry friend around the house can improve blood pressure and heart health, lower cholesterol and triglycerides and even ease depression. Also, owning a dog encourages an active lifestyle due to their need for walks and play. Officials say rescued shelter pets are often extremely loyal and loving, as well.
For those who want to help a shelter animal but aren’t up to adopt, fostering is a great option, says SCAS. It keeps pets out of shelters and provides them with comfort and companionship while they prepare for a new home. Apply to foster in Sumter County here.
Qualified applicants can adopt a pet for free on Aug. 26 by visiting the SCAS shelter at 819 CR 529 in Lake Panasoffkee from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. To learn more, visit Sumter County’s website.
